DFW HR Roundtable December 13, 2011

Pearson Partners International regularly hosts the bimonthly meetings of the DFW HR Roundtable, a networking and knowledge-sharing group of senior human resources executives in the North Texas area.

image of ties to tattoos bookIt happens all around us: people from different generations see, experience and understand things differently. They have different perspectives, viewpoints and motivators, often resulting in misunderstandings and missed opportunities, especially in the workplace. The Traditionalist in the tie wonders why the Millennial with practically bare feet thinks flip flops are actually shoes. The Gen X’er with a smartphone swears he’ll flip out if his Baby Boomer boss schedules one more useless meeting. And the Millennial, well, she just can’t understand why she’s not already the boss. Does this sound familiar? These differing and sometimes opposing viewpoints can be a recipe for disaster in the workplace. But skillful managers can learn how to orchestrate these differences to create harmony and a productive team.

The December 13, 2011, DFW HR Roundtable featured author, HR consultant and generational speaker Sherri Elliott-Yeary, founder of Gen InsYght, a multi-generational training company. Ms. Elliott-Yeary is known as the “Generational Guru”, and is the author of the book “Ties to Tattoos—Turning Generational Differences into a Competitive Advantage.” Ms. Elliott-Yeary discussed with the group how to attract, engage, motivate and develop employees across multiple generations. She explained the differences between each generation, identified what makes each generation tick, and shared practical tips for bridging the communication gap and enhancing communication. In an informative and interactive session that included role-playing of common real-life scenarios, the group learned innovative strategies for leveraging generational differences to create a harmonious work environment that attracts top talent, minimizes turnover, and maximizes company morale.
